"Students embarking on Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced GCE study in Mathematics are expected to have achieved at least Grade C in GCSE Mathematics or equivalent, and to have covered all the material in the Intermediate tier. In addition, students will be expected to be able to use the material listed whenever it is required. This material, together with the GCSE material, is regarded as assumed background knowledge. It will not be tested by questions focussed directly on it. However, it may be assessed within questions focussed on other material from the relevant specification."
