C. REAL LIFE PROBLEMS - MONEY

Key objective: to help children use the four rules of number mentally to solve simple problems involving money.

The activities in this section require the child to complete problems involving:

  • the value of all coins.

  • exchanging coins for their equivalent value using several smaller coins.

  • different ways of paying the same amounts using different coins.

  • finding the total cost of several items in a shop.

  • finding the difference in cost between items of less than £1.

  • working out the change from 20p and 50p coins.

  • finding missing amounts.

  • arranging coins to total a stated amount.

He or she will have to decide if the calculation can be done mentally or if additional apparatus such as coins or pencil and paper are required.
