Vocabulary and definitions:

Oxygen:
This is a gas that is carried in the blood. It is needed by the cells in our bodies.
Lungs:
We have two lungs. We breathe air, with oxygen in it, into our lungs, where the oxygen passes into the blood, to be taken all around the body.
Blood Vessels:
These are the tubes that carry the blood.
Circulation:
This word is used to describe the way in which the blood flows around the body. It is sometimes called the 'Circulatory System'.
Pulse:
As the heart pumps the blood around the body, the surge of blood can be felt where the blood vessels are close to the skin. This is your pulse. Your pulse rate is the same as your heart rate because every time your heart beats, a pulse can be felt.
Resting Rate:
When we are resting, our heart beats at a steady pace. This is just about the same each time we measure it. After exercising, if we then relax, our heart rate will drop to its resting rate. This rate is different for each of us.
