Plants use energy from the sun to make food. They also need water
and minerals which the plant roots take up from the soil, and a
gas called carbon dioxide, which the plant takes in from the air.
When the light from the sun shines on a plant a substance in the
leaves, called chlorophyll uses the light to turn the water, carbon
dioxide and minerals into food.
The plant then uses this food to grow new leaves, flowers, fruits
and seeds.
