Solids, Liquids and Gases

Features of solids, liquids and gases

Things can be solid, liquid or gas. For example, water can be ice (solid), water (liquid) or steam (gas).

In solids:
  • molecules are packed together
  • molecules have a regular arrangement
  • molecules have strong links
Solids:
  • have a fixed shape
  • are not easily compressed
  • do not flow (except powders)
  • are useful for making solid structures
  • include rock, iron, and diamond
In liquids:
  • molecules are further apart
  • molecules do not have a regular arrangement
  • molecules have weak links
Liquids:
  • have no fixed shape
  • are not easily compressed
  • flow easily
  • are useful for making mixtures
  • include water, petrol and orange juice
In gases:
  • molecules move off in all directions
  • molecules do not have a regular arrangement
  • molecules have no links
Gases:
  • have no fixed shape
  • are easily compressed
  • flow easily
  • are useful for burning
  • include oxygen, carbon dioxide, steam and methane

The state of the examples given is as we would find them at normal room temperature.
