Soils can be acid, alkaline or somewhere in between. This is measured
on a scale of pH value, which ranges from 1 (very acid) to 14 (very
alkali). You can test the pH value of a soil by using a soil tester
kit. Soils with a reading below 7 are acid, those at 7 are neutral
and those above 7 are alkali. Most soils have a pH value somewhere
between 5.0 and 8.0.
The best kind of soil for most plants is a loam soil with a pH
value of 5.5 - 7.5.
