Soil texture

The texture of a soil depends on the amounts of sand, silt and clay it contains. If you can, take a handful of clean damp soil and roll it in your hands to feel the texture. Ask your teacher or another adult before you do this, and wash your hands well afterwards. The table below tells you how different soil textures feel when you roll them in your hand.
