Soils

Different soil components

Soil is the material that covers land. Soils consist of a mixture of different things, such as:

  • Sand - sediment consisting of mineral particles (mainly quartz) which covers parts of the sea-shore, river beds and deserts.

  • Silt - sediment consisting of mineral particles smaller than sand.

  • Clay - sediment consisting of very small mineral particles. It is a stiff paste-like material used in pottery.

  • Dust - minute particles light enough to be carried by the wind.

  • Humus - dark-coloured material which comes from decomposed plants.

  • Peat - dead, partly decomposed plant material which accumulates in layers.
