There are three main types of rocks - sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous.
Sedimentary rocks are made:
from bits of other rock plus plant and animal remains
mainly below oceans
by pressure
Metamorphic rocks are made:
from igneous or sedimentary rock
mainly in the roots of mountains
by heat and pressure
Igneous rocks are made:
from magma or lava
near volcanoes or plate boundaries
by cooling of the molten material
