The English and Welsh National Curriculum states in the Key Stage
1 programme of study, under the heading 'Science in everyday life':
Pupils should be given opportunities to:
a: relate their understanding of science to domestic and
environmental contexts;
b: consider ways in which science is relevant to their
personal health.
Under the heading 'Health and safety', pupils should be taught
to:
a: recognise hazards and risks when working with living
things and materials;
b: follow simple instructions to control the risks to themselves.
The Physical Processes section states:
1. Electricity
Pupils should be taught:
a: that many everyday appliances use electricity.
Possible classroom activities:
Put out batteries, wires, bulb in a holder and a buzzer. Allow
the children to explore and see if they can make the bulb light
and the buzzer buzz.
Using the same equipment, help them to understand that a complete
circuit is needed to make an electrical circuit work.
Encourage children to draw pictures of their circuit. They should
indicate, verbally or in writing, that they understand that the
bulb will not light if there is a break in the circuit.
