The Times Tables unit is intended to be used with Year 2 and 3
children, though if you feel it is appropriate for other classes
by all means use it!
The grid can be edited. It will default to the ten times table,
but to change to another times table simply click on the grid and
hit the 'c' key and then the 'h' key on your keyboard. Then enter
the chosen number (1 - 9, 'e' for eleven and 't' for twelve). To
return to the ten times table, enter 0.
Within the Numeracy Framework teaching programme the unit addresses
the following sections:
Calculations
- Understanding multiplication and division - rapid recall of
multiplication facts.
Know by heart multiplication facts for the 10 times table.
(Main activity, worksheets, and ICT activity)
- Derive quickly.
Division facts corresponding to the 10 times table.
(Extension activities)
- To multiply by 10 shift the digits one place to the left.
(All activities)
- To multiply by 100, shift the digits two places to the left.
(Worksheets)
Numbers and the Number System
- Begin to recognise two digit multiples of 10.
- Recognise two and three digit multiples of 10 and three digit
multiples of 100.
(Worksheets)
Suggested use of the unit
Rather than focussing on the activities over a week, the recall
and practice of multiplication facts seems better spread over a
period of time with frequent returns and repetitions.
Once the basic song and the mathematics behind it have been mastered
by the children, then revisiting the song when there are a few moments
to spare will help to ensure embedding of the facts. Click
here for the lyrics to the 10 Times Song. Use the 'Print' function
in your browser to print out a copy of the words which you can use.
The worksheets and activities can be used to reinforce learning,
test for understanding and extend children's knowledge.
All activities in this unit lend themselves well to whole class
mental maths introductory sessions.
